Private Classes

If you are new to yoga or are experiencing a particular area of difficulty in your yoga practice or need specific practices for a particular aspect of your health and feel you would benefit from a private yoga lesson, please phone me to make an appointment.

Some students enjoy a combination of counselling and yoga practice which is possible in a private class where only one student is present so that individual attention can be received. Private classes also suit those who cannot attend group classes at the available times.

Integral Vinyasa Krama Yoga classes

Yoga is a way of life, an integrated system of education for the body, mind and inner spirit, This path of right living was perfected and practised in India thousands of years ago. Since Yoga deals with universal truths, its teachings are as valid today as they were in ancient times. Yoga is a practical aid, not a religion and its techniques may be practised by Buddhists, Jews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus and atheists alike. Yoga is union with all.

Classes take a form of Integral Vinyasa Krama and include asanas (yoga postures or exercises), pranayama (working with the breath), relaxation preparing for meditation.
A philosophical approach based on the teachings of yoga are integrated into the classes.

I am a fully qualified yoga teacher. I spent some time training as a teacher in a Satyananda yoga centre. I completed a teacher training course at Ananda Sanga, Somerset West, in Vinyasa Integral Yoga which included a basic training in Ayurveda.

What is Yoga?

The word Yoga, means Union; union of mind, body, spirit.

The practice of yoga is suitable for all temperaments and body types. Every part of the physical body and etheric body is effected by yoga, improving the functioning of all the bodies systems and organs. Yoga is a way of life, an integrated system of education for the body, mind and spirit.

When asana's are correctly practiced there is a good balance between exercises which create strength and those which create flexibility in the body. In yoga the original reason for the practice of asanas is to prepare the mind and body for meditation.

We start our yoga classes with a centring exercise assisting the student to rest in the Self. This awareness prepares for higher development and meditation.

The science of yoga is not based on constantly changing or evolving research data, but on universal truth and eternal wisdom of the ancient yogis or gurus (ones who cast light on darkness) who received this science thousands of years ago through spiritual introspection and meditation. Expressive of the perfect wholeness of Cosmic Consciousness, yoga is a timeless science.

There are many different schools of yoga but if one examines them one finds the differences usually lie in emphasis or approach rather than anything fundamental.

The science of Yoga incorporates spirituality and philosophy too. The word spirituality here relates to beliefs and disciplines which assist to create states of being in which the doors of perception open to all aspects of life. In yoga the whole of life’s journey is seen as sacred. The word philosophy refers to the love of truth. In yoga truth is Be-ing, Pure Existence. The Source of all life.

Yoga is a path; no matter the distance covered there is benefit.

“In the East the key to understanding is acceptance, observation and experience; in the West, it is questioning, analysis and logical deduction. The Western mind, generally, trusts objectivity, while the Eastern gives more emphasis to subjectivity. Eastern science teaches one to go beyond the division between subjectivity and objectivity”

(Ayurveda The Science of Self-Healing by Dr Vasant Lad)

In the West we are encouraged to think in terms of opposites. In the early years at school we were trained to make of comparisons; hot-cold, dry-wet, good-bad, etc. Such an approach creates dualism or separation consciousness. Yoga seeks to create consciousness of unity of all. Contemplate the following list extracted from the Hatha Pradipika by Swami Muktibodhananda where a third option is brought in for consideration which may be termed ‘the middle way’.

What is your body type?
Answer the questions by remembering yourself when you were young, happy and healthy. Be completely honest as it is only for your reference. Each question has a choice of three answers, therefore we give each a total of 3 points (per row). You may find that the description fits you 100% and so give yourself 3 points, or you may feel 2 of the 3 are for you so you divide the 3 points into the proportion you feel fits (1,5 each or 2 and 1). If all 3 answers are appropriate, divide the points up equally, giving each description 1 point. Take your time and answer as accurately and honestly as you can.
