SANCTA 3rd Annual Community Awards, 2nd annual Full Length production awards, Nominees for the Naledi Award for Best Community Theatre Production - all the winners.
The 3rd Sancta Annual Community Festival Award Ceremony, combining the 2nd Sancta Full length Play Festival, was held today 19th February as a precursor to The 3rd Naledi Award Ceremony. At an impressive award ceremony, Yvette Hardie, who is a co-producer of The Collonades Theatre Lab, and has been a Sancta Adjudicator the last year, was the Guest Hostess. She stated that she had enjoyed her year as Sancta adjudicator, confirming that Sancta had a great role to play in education and acting as a mentor for the many multi cultural/ lingual community groups that needed an outlet for their talents. Ismail Mohamed, patron of Sancta, re - iterated the importance of Sancta in the greater theatrical picture and said that the talent that resided within Sancta and its members was vast and that Sancta acted as a future training ground for the next generation of theatrical graduates, from an administrative, theatrical and technical perspective. Sancta now has members in Mpumalanga, North West and Limpopo Provinces and he appealed to Corporates and funders present to support Sancta so that it ultimately is representative of the whole of South Africa and ultimately runs a national festival. Sancta is also a platform for audience development and to show the rich cultural talent South Africa has. Our guest Hosts were Rowan Cloete of Ateball Productions - last seen in "Love, Valour and Compassion” and soon to perform as Herod in "Jesus Christ Superstar” for Pieter Toerien - and Kim Nicholas is well known on Kyknet as presenter, particularly "Zing”and producer. Both she and Rowan are co founders of a company, Long Island Productions, which has just completed a 52 part series of a comedic musical revue show for the newly commissioned channel MK89 for DSTV. Rowan stated that although they were both lucky to start their careers in the professional arena and that this was their first direct contact with Community theatre (though they know of Sancta well through their connections with previous Sancta Patrons Henry Mylne and Vinette Ebrahim both mainly of "7de Laan” fame at present) , they could not help be greatly impressed by the body of work in both festivals and by the commitment and dedication of the members of the Sancta family, who as Ismail said "Don’t get paid and do their theatre work purely for the love of it” He emphasized the need for professionals to recognize Sancta who were training the future generation of theatrical talent. He mentioned his mentors in theatre - Henry Mylne and particularly Blaise Koch, an Aids Sufferer and activist, who had shown great fortitude and courage to come out of retirement to play a major role in "Love, Valour and Compassion", to reinforce the kind of commitment Sancta members have and saying that there is opportunities for all of us with talents to go places deservedly in the future.
