Old Mutual Theatre on the Square, Nelson Mandela Square at Sandton City

Celebrating its 15th year with 15 productions!

2011 Theatre Line-Up

Daphne Kuhn will be serving a delicious a la carte menu of fine theatre for 2011 to whet the appetite - meaty new local and international plays, satisfying revivals, steamy musicals, spicy comedies, cool classical music and hot, sizzling jazz. The theatre will proudly host the Cape Town hit and award winner, LONDON ROAD by Nick Spagnoletti, directed by Lara Bye in late February. But for starters in January, there will be a return season of the popular production TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE, followed by Barbara-Anne Puren's CASUAL SAX.

In addition to the line up for the first few months, audiences can look forward to a musical revue with Judy Page; the hilarious comic opera, THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE by Gilbert and Sullivan, directed by Greg Homann; a new South African play by Les Morrison, THE PRIZE OF PEACE to be directed to Clare Stopford; and a return visit by Israeli actor, Roy Horovitz with his production MY FIRST SONY.

And just when you thought we couldn't serve any more, the theatre will resume its weekly classical music lunch hour programme on Fridays from the 14th January. There will be four seasons of chamber music concerts in association with the Johannesburg Philharmonic orchestra and Sunday night JAZZ CONCERTS - as well as the Gauteng High One-Act School Play Festival in May.

Mark Sampson's Africa Clockwise: 1st - 19th Nov

Is Mark Sampson’s Africa Clockwise a stand-up comedy show?
Or a show about taking his family in a giant green 10-ton truck around Africa in a clockwise direction?
Or a show about how the wisdom of Africa can show us the way to cope with climate change?

The answer is all of the above!

Our ecological clock is ticking, but don’t be alarmed. This laughter-packed, solar-powered off-the-grid ECOmedy will make you feel so much better about the end of the world as we know it…

Mark Sampson is a master of taking unwieldy subjects, and turning them into comedy gold. His previous hit stand-up show Missing Links explored 6 million years of evolution, while Feels Funny tackled depression – both were sell-out successes. In Africa Clockwise, SA’s most adventurous and thought-provoking comedian continues his revolutionary journey in his most demanding quest yet.

Come and discover how Sampson plans to challenge his children to cope with climate change on a 2 year trek around the coast of Africa – and challenge his audience to ‘BEAT THE HEAT’ as the crazy host of a global warming game show. Africa Clockwise is groundbreaking, hilarious - and 100% Eskom-free!

“Mark Sampson seeks to entertain and educate through his brand new stand-up act. Poking fun at the modern consumerist lifestyle and its impact on global warming, Sampson hilariously explores what it means to ‘go green’ in this day and age. Extremely funny” - CUE 2011, National Arts Festival.

For this production, Mark Sampson has received a supporting grant from BASA.

There are special group bookings discounts - and on Tuesdays nights tickets are two for the price of one!

Fundraisers and dinner show packages as well as school group outings and can also be arranged.

Performances will take place from Tuesdays – Friday at 8.15 and Saturdays at 6pm and 8.30 pm

Don’t miss this fun-filled family show for all!

DEEP FRIED MAN: 21 November - 3 December
Daniel Friedman is the DEEP FRIED MAN
winner of the SA Comedian of the Year in
DEEPLY FRIED
21 November - 3 December
For Two Weeks Only

This November, award-winning musical comedian Deep Fried Man brings his debut one-man show Deeply Fried to Sandton's Old Mutual Theatre on the Square.

The show, which won a Standard Bank Ovation Award when it debuted at the 2011 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, is an hilarious and uniquely South African mix of music, comedy, satire and parody. Armed with just his guitar, Deep Fried Man invites you to watch him braai some holy cows as he takes on a diverse array of topics including life in South Africa, his Jewish roots, sex, modern life and social media.

Deep Fried Man has had much success since the start of his comedy career less than two years ago, winning the Newcomer Award at the inaugural Comics Choice Awards as well as the Parkers Comedy Showdown. He has made various TV appearances, including being resident musical comedian on the most recent series of LOL; has performed at some of SA's biggest comedy events including the Heavyweight Comedy Jam and the Jozi Comedy Fest and has opened for a run of Trevor Noah's one-man show Scratch That.

Now he proudly invites you into his strange world for the Deeply Fried experience. Deep Fried Man's brand of humour is quirky, bizarre and at times controversial. Like deep fried food, his music is extremely cooked and very tasty, but definitely quite bad for you.

Funnier than Freshly Ground! More musical than Barry Hilton! Cheaper than The Phantom of the Opera! Deeply Fried is not to be missed!

"Fantastic… Creative improv, great rapport with audience, jumps genres all the time… I love his sense of humour. Wacky and unique". - Zapiro
